“Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.” Lamentations 3:22

The picture this verse puts in my head is one of a bright morning sun shining through sheer curtains initiating the start of a new, beautiful day. A fresh start. A clean slate. But what if the thing that sets you back does not happen at the end of the day? What if it happens at the beginning? Ever heard the term “wake up on the wrong side of the bed”?

This verse is a beautiful picture of God’s grace for us, but we have to remember that His mercies are not finite. It’s not a one per day limit. The grace of God is constantly abounding for us, so if you have a bad morning, there is hope to turn it around.

So often, I let the beginning of my day steer my ship. Something goes wrong and I can let it derail the whole day.

But it does not have to be that way. I am reminded by this verse that even a morning where the sun is not shining and your heart feels heavy, can end up being a good day. I can’t let emotions or situations rule the outcome of my day. I can let God do that.

There is a song that has the lyric “every breath is a second chance”. Because, of Jesus, I believe those words are true. It’s not the night that wipes our slate clean for a new morning. It is the work of Jesus on the cross that our sins are consistently forgiven.

We don’t have to wait until morning to start over. God forgives us in the moment we ask for it and repent. We can turn from our sins and turn our day around. His mercies are new right now. Let this truth lead you into the rest of a good day no matter how the morning looked.
